Jon Gargis began his career as a newspaper reporter, transitioning to an editor with Patch.com as it launched multiple sites across metro Atlanta in late 2010. Once establishing Dallas-Hiram Patch in Paulding County, Georgia, Gargis helmed the county’s only daily news site for two years.

Dallas-Hiram Patch was put on the digital map in earnest when Gargis was the first
to report Paulding County Schools’ Jan. 13, 2011 decision to cancel the next month’s weeklong winter break after snow and ice led to the cancelations of a week of classes.

A track record and passion for promoting the Patch brand and its content led to Gargis’ promotion to community editor, where he oversaw and posted to the social media accounts of more than a dozen metro Atlanta Patch sites.

One of Gargis’ and Dallas-Hiram Patch’s shining moments was when Paulding County Schools was awarded the $100,000 grand prize from Patch’s 2012 “Deck the House” contest. Joey Felix and his family had their Dallas home selected by Patch readers across the country as the "best decked" house in the competition, which asked residents of Patch towns to submit photos and videos of their homes decorated for the holiday season. Winning the contest meant their local school district—Paulding County Schools—would receive $100,000. It had been neck-and-neck in the final hours of the contest, but after placing second in the 2011 contest, the Paulding home took top honors in the 2012 competition.

After Patch, Gargis went on to report for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Jewish Times, Reporter Newspapers and the Marietta Daily Journal (MDJ), with his news articles and photos published in the MDJ and many of its sister publications.

Gargis’ credentials go beyond his work hours, as he has proofread, edited and even written copy for several nonprofits in a volunteer capacity. He previously assisted the Bartow County School System by serving on a committee working to obtain accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). In addition to providing feedback on the school district’s efforts, he aided the committee by proofreading and editing its reports.

For Relay For Life of Paulding County’s 2014 campaign, Gargis authored a media awareness campaign in the weeks leading up to the May event, which led to coverage from all major local media outlets. Those efforts, along with other initiatives in months prior, including callouts for team signups and profiles on new and returning teams, resulted in an increase in the number of participating teams over the previous year.
